Not My First Choice!
Round cages aren’t ideal for parrots for several important reasons. The primary concern is that they don’t offer a quiet corner where a parrot can perch comfortably. Parrots need a spot where they can feel protected and secure, a place to retreat and relax.
In a round cage, there’s no clear barrier or back wall for them to lean against, which can make them feel exposed and vulnerable. The continuous flow of space in a round cage can create a sense of unease, as it doesn’t provide the necessary structure to help them feel safe.
Providing a rectangular or square cage, with clear corners and sides, ensures your parrot has a place to retreat and feel secure, which is essential for their well-being. In this shape, I still go out of my way to provide safe spaces– not a cozy made of fabric. I provide bat-boxes (an upside-down nest box with no bottom) or a space that is covered by a safe cloth or wood.
