Four species I keep — Peach-faced, Fischer’s, Masked, and the rare Nyasa. The smallest true parrots in my placements, and consistently among the most demanding for their size.
Lifespans of 10-15 years are realistic. The single biggest decision before bringing one home is whether you want a hand-raised solo bird or a bonded pair — they are very different relationships.
What Lovebird Keepers Discover Quickly
Solo or Pair
Solo hand-raised birds bond deeply to you. Bonded pairs bond to each other and largely ignore you. Decide before you buy — re-taming a paired bird is essentially impossible.
Beak Above Weight Class
Lovebirds bite hard for their size, particularly when frightened or hormonal. Hand-raised birds are gentle in handling but never assume small means safe.
Apartment-Tolerable
Single bird with proper enrichment manages well in most flats. Bonded pair calls back-and-forth all day and is much louder.
