African Parrots

Steady, Observant, Gifted

“African parrots have a steadier, more observant disposition than most South American species — and the African Greys remain the most respected talking parrots in aviculture.”

The African parrots I keep cover two distinct groups: the smaller-to-medium Poicephalus (Senegal, Meyer’s, Cape, Brown-headed, Jardine’s, Red-bellied) and the larger African Greys (Congo and Timneh).

What unifies them is a steadier, more observant disposition than most South American parrots — and, in the case of the Greys, the most respected speech ability in aviculture.

The Poicephalus Warm-Up

Senegals, Meyers, and Capes tend to be reserved with new people for the first few weeks. Push too hard and you set the relationship back; let them come to you.

Greys Are Exceptional

Both Congo and Timneh are widely regarded as the most accomplished talking parrots — vocabulary potential of 200+ words and unusually high contextual understanding.

Generally Manageable

Senegals, Meyers, and Greys are noticeably quieter than equivalent South American parrots. Apartment-friendly in many cases — the Meyer’s especially.

Every Cape Parrot I have placed has surprised the family with how cuddly and chatty they are. They break the African-parrot stereotype completely.
