What is an “Alebrije?”

An Alebrije is a mexican art in which artists pain patterns onto wooden animal figures. Similar to the Day of the Dead custom of decorating a sugar skull, Kalyn loves the idea of decorating illustrations of her parrots with patterns that show ‘what they are made of.’ Some of her parrots have flowers or leaves in their souls, which show through in their Alebrije art; others have animals, swirls of energy or other interpretive symbols that illustrate their connection to nature, to their spirit and to life.
