Macaws
Macaws
An Evolutionary Masterpiece
“Macaws are everything most people picture when they think ‘parrot’ — the colour, the size, the intelligence, the personality, and the operatic volume to match.”
The macaw family runs from Hahn’s at 165 grams up to Hyacinths at 1.5 kilos. Lifespans of 40 to 70 years are realistic. They are dramatically intelligent, deeply social, and decades-long emotional companions for the right keeper.
For most first-time-macaw buyers, I steer toward the mini macaws — Hahn’s, Severe, Yellow-collared. They give you the personality without the apartment-shattering volume.
What Sets Macaws Apart
Operatic Volume
Flock calls evolved to carry across kilometres of rainforest. Dawn and dusk vocal sessions are inevitable; not suitable for apartments or shared walls.
Cognitive Depth
Comparable to a three-year-old child. Macaws solve puzzles, use tools, and form lifelong pair-bonds that anchor their flock dynamics.
Decades-Long
Lifespans of 50 to 70 years are realistic. Plan for the bird to outlast your dog, your car, and possibly your next house — including in your will.
A Hyacinth’s beak generates the highest bite force of any parrot. Hand-raised birds rarely use it in earnest, but you handle macaws with respect from day one.

Looking for a Hand-Raised Macaw Species?
Parrot Bliss hand-raises a small number of macaws each year here in West Palm Beach, Florida. Every chick fed by Kalyn personally, weaned onto Harrison’s pellets, and placed only with families who genuinely understand what they’re taking on.
