Dusky Lory at a Glance
The Dusky Lory is one of the most underrated lories in the pet trade. At about 10 inches and 90 to 115 grams, it is smaller than a Chattering or Rainbow Lory, with a brown to olive body and bright orange or yellow band across the chest. Two natural colour phases exist, and in good light the orange almost glows against the darker plumage. The bird looks like nothing else in the lory family.
Personality is where Dusky Lories really win people over. They are clowns. Hanging upside down, rolling onto their backs, wrestling with toys, asking for head scratches and then biting the hand playfully: this is the daily Dusky Lory routine. Many bond hard to their primary person and become genuinely cuddly, more so than most parrots in their size class. Talking ability is moderate, with some birds learning a useful handful of words.
Honest expectations matter here. Dusky Lories are still lories. That means a liquid nectar diet, daily cleanup of liquid droppings, and a higher noise floor than a Pionus or Senegal. They are a step easier than a Chattering or Rainbow because the voice is less piercing and the bird is smaller, but they are not a starter parrot. Other family members get tolerance and cooperative step-ups but rarely the same level of cuddly behaviour. This is not a flaw, just a species reality. Multi-person households should distribute handling early in the bird's life if they want a more even bond.
Watch for over-arousal. A Dusky Lory in play mode bites harder than its size suggests, and the bird does not always know when to stop. Pinned eyes, fanned tail, and rapid hopping mean it is time to put the bird down for a few minutes. Most well-socialised Duskies have very few real bite incidents, but the species is physical and beginners often misread excitement for aggression.

Dusky Lories are loud, but in a different way than their bigger cousins. The voice is high and repetitive rather than piercing, with a constant low chatter punctuated by sharp bursts when the bird is excited or wants attention. Daily noise is moderate to high. Diet
Like all lories, the Dusky Lory needs a liquid nectar diet as the base of its food. A commercial lory formula such as Lory Life Powder, Higgins inTune Nectar, or Avico Lori Nectar should be mixed fresh daily and offered in clean dishes that are washed every single day. Old nectar grows bacteria and yeast within hours in a warm room, and a sick lory often traces back to dishes that were not rinsed thoroughly between feedings.
Around the nectar, offer a daily plate of soft fresh foods. Papaya, mango, melon, fig, ripe pear, and small amounts of banana work well. Edible flowers including hibiscus, nasturtium, and rose petals from un-sprayed gardens are excellent enrichment. Vegetables in smaller quantities are fine: corn, sweet potato, cooked squash, and grated carrot. Avoid citrus and heavy iron sources, and never offer avocado, chocolate, caffeine, onion, garlic, or salty human food. Seeds and dry pellets are not appropriate as a main food for this species.

Equip with two or three perches of varied diameter, a stainless steel water bottle backed up by an open dish, and a rotating set of foraging toys and shreddable wood.
